Tech Thursday: Five English Practice Mobile Apps

Learning English is not easy, but it is important and beneficial for a student to have a good command of the English language. You will agree with me that English goes beyond taking Communication in English (GST 111 and 122) courses in school.

On the previous edition of Tech Thursday, I shared five apps a student should use, this week will feature English learning apps for every student that desires to improve his or her English proficiency.

This app is a fun, free software for learning languages, which includes English. Its game-like lessons and fun characters help the user build solid speaking, reading, listening, and writing.

Hello English

This is a free Spoken English App to learn English speaking, reading and writing. It has free interactive lessons, interactive games, discussion, daily practice, conversation and speaking practice features.

It has embedded dictionary to learn new words and pronunciation with multi-player features. Get it on Play Store.


This is not the edible cake, but an app. This app allows you to learn English from videos with real English expressions curated from YouTube. It offers speaking practices that simulate conversations with native speakers.

Cake allows you to check your pronunciation with its AI speech recognition. It is free and available on Play Store.

BBC Learning English

This app is the official BBC Learning English App. You can download BBC programmes with subtitles. It has new daily lessons.

After practicing your listening and reading skills, you can take quizzes to test your knowledge. Download the app on Play Store.

Hello Talk

This app technically allows you to learn global languages that include English. You can choose a partner in perfecting your pronunciation, improving your grammar skills.
