Students have found a new love in betting platforms like sporty bet, BetKing, Accessbet, 1xbet, Bet9ja, and others. The love for betting has taken a new dimension among Nigerian students due to the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) as a quick and easy way of making money.
ASUU, an umbrella body of the teaching staff of federal and state government-owned universities in Nigeria on February 14, 2022 embarked on an indefinite strike to demand certain conditions including the implementation of the 2009 agreement.
The lecturer’s demands include funding for the revitalization of public universities, Earned Academic Allowances, University Transparency Accountability solutions (UTAS) and promotion arrears.
The students in an interview with AAUA INSIDER disclosed that they embraced betting to avoid idleness as the lingering strike continues.
A student, Oluyemi Ayokunle who doesn’t want his school name in print stated that betting is risky and tricky but the joy derived after winning makes him continue betting even if ASUU call-off its strike.
“To be sincere, I have been addicted to playing as I have played more than four bookings today which are worth twenty thousand naira and I am still going to play more. That was how I did it since the ASUU strike began.
“I don’t know why I play more and I am aware of the effect but I derive pleasure from it,” he said.
Another student, Bolajoko Adeyemi, a chemistry student at Ekiti State University revealed that betting does not take attention as other vocations, adding that he is still engaged in other things while placing bets.
“I have a job but ASUU’s lingering strike pushed me to start betting. I bet because I want to make some money, not like those that took it as a job or vocation,” he narrated.
Adeyemi said he diverted into betting because of the ASUU strike.
“I have been in my hometown with my family doing nothing and betting is part of the few things one can do to make money legally”.
Similarly, Adekunle Ademola, a student of Abia State University divulged that he is into different online skills but plays best as a side hustle.
“It is interesting and can be done for fun or to catch fun with.
“You’re playing with your money actually but just have fun with it and by luck, you can be fortunate to hit the jackpot. I do not take a sporty bet over other vocations like handiwork because it’s just like a side hustle.
“I make money in betting and also focused on other direction since ASUU refuses to call off the strike”, he narrated
