This very unusual novel is one about perseverance.

At the beginning of the novel, the author paints a vivid picture of the middle class Korean family.

The family of a fisherman and his wife opens the way to to a long generation of family members (including the in-laws)

Hoonie, the only surviving child of this couple is born with a cleft palate and a twisted foot. Withstanding all odds, he grew up and fully took over the family business of taking in Lodgers.

He gets married to a hard-working young girl, Yangjin who helps him successfully run the business and refuses to let it die down even after the death of Hoonie and his parents.

Min Jin Lee takes the reader through the generations of Hoonie’s family; his child, grandchildren and beyond.

The Pachinko business is one most Korean families consider unclean. They refuse to allow most of their children associate themselves with it….
