Dara Ayodeji also known as Okokomaiko of Mass Communication, a talented comedian and political activist. Okokomaiko talked about his inspiration and the rumour that he is a ‘political thug’ in Adekunle Ajasin University Akungba-Akoko Ondo State. Excerpts…
Kindly introduce yourself.
My name is Dara Ayodeji Marvelous Oluwadamilola. I was ejected by a doctor to the surface of the earth through my mother’s womb on February 16, 1998, in a local geographical area in Oka-Akoko, Ondo State.
Tell us about your educational background.
I had my primary education at Grace & Glory Nursery and Primary School at Oka-Akoko Ondo State before I later proceeded to Olaoluwa Grammar School Oka-Akoko for my secondary education. It was there I sat down for my West African Examination Council (WAEC) and National Examination Council (NECO) and to God who made me, I graduated in flying colors, after graduation things weren’t going as planned, but somehow, when God would have His way again, I was admitted to study Mass Communication at Adekunle Ajasin University Akungba-Akoko here in Ondo State.
You said “things weren’t going as planned”, how do you mean?
Jamb issues actually, but I dont want to talk about that and I will just say this; you need high scores to study ‘high’ courses (laughs).
I heard that you are so talented, is that true?
(Smiles) Actually, that is true, because back in year 2018/2019 when I started as a comedian I was a well-known person on social media most expecially on Facebook.
How does your other creative ideas come in?
God created different people with different talents or same talents but I think he gave me much more than I could imagine because I have been a comedian and I joke so well. I have also been an artist and I painted so perfectly or should I talk about being a cartoonist? God has been so good to me and all this talents come from Him.
There is another rumour out there that says you are a political thug, how true is that?
When you fight for your rights or other people’s rights they will tag you as a ‘political thug’. The answer to your question is No.
You said you are not a political thug, why do people call you “Okokomaiko of Mass communication”?
Okokomaiko means a leader, freedom fighter or what my fellow students call ‘capacity’, I don’t see anything bad with the name “Okokomaiko”, infact I am a member of the SUEC, and a thug would never be allowed to be a member, so that should speak volume.
Do you know what the future holds for you?
This question you ask makes me remember the song we used to sing then in primary school days, which goes thus “bla bla (laughing) I must get there, my future is bright ooo! I must get there” actually to say the truth, I don’t know what the future holds for me but I believe I will succeed in this life.
What advice do you have for the young ones who are so talented like you?
A very old comedian still living once said to me, “Son, be real, and if you are going to redo or copy somebody else’s work please do acknowledge them, remember it is a small world, you never know what might happen in the future.” Those were the words of the old comedian, if I were to be you I will stick with those words because it is working for me now.
