Since the ‘violent’ protest that led to the indefinite closure of the University by the management of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, AAUA, there has been different misinformation and disinformation flying around.
One of the claim gaining massive shares is about resumption and reparation fee to be paid.
CLAIM: The claim contained in a circular in circulation in the last days of November is that AAUA students are expected to resume on 18th of December 2021.
The claim read in part, “Students of AAUA to resume on 18th of December 2021.
“Students are instructed to return to school and school premises observing all COVID-19 protocol.”
According to a Fact Check by AAUA INSIDER, the verdict says the circular in circulation is fake.
Another claim contained in the circular is that AAUA students are expected to pay the sum of N20,000 for damages.
The claim read, “The school management announce the ‘Damages fee of #20000 to all students with great response’.payment of this fee will be in school portal dashboard outline.”
POTENTIAL IMPACT OF THE CLAIM: The claim has been circulated and shared many times on Facebook, of which AAUA students are active members. Also, this claim was shared widely on WhatsApp as a broadcast message.
VERIFICATION: The claim was debunked by several journalist and bloggers on campus, stating that there was lack of evidence to back it up.
Looking at the circular, it contains grammatical errors and it was signed by the Vice Chancellor, Olugbenga Ige instead of the Registrar.
After a phone conversation with Mr Victor Akinpelumi, IPPRU Head, he said the University is yet to decide.
“The Senate is yet to decide on the resumption and reparation fee. Any information that you are seeing now is fake.
“We are at the Senate. No information on those things.”
VERDICT: From available information provided by verifiable sources, it is without doubt that AAUA students are not resuming on December 18, 2021 and that the Senate has not agreed on the reparation fee. And all the claims circulating is regarded as MISLEADING and FALSE.
