Adekunle Ajasin University Students Elect New SUG President Despite Delay in Election Commencement

The Students’ Union Government (SUG) election of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, Ondo state commenced on May 4, 2023. However, the election, which was slated to begin at 8:00 am, was delayed until 10:56 am due to the absence of candidates’ agents.

Despite the delay, students expressed satisfaction with the election process. Nonetheless, they attributed the low turnout of students to the “no school fees, no voting policy” adopted by the university management.

Ariyo Opeyemi Kayode, a 300-level Philosophy student, praised the university management for the election’s arrangement and emphasized that the process was free and fair. Opeyemi, however, pointed out that the collection of tallies slowed the election’s pace but commended it for avoiding violence. He pleaded with the university management to rescind the policy.

Similarly, Adebayo Hammed Abiodun, a 200-level Public Administration student, commended the peaceful environment created by the election’s smooth conduct.

Following the delay in the election’s commencement, the Students Union Election Committee (SUEC) Chairman, Prof. Olukayode Afolabi, ordered an extension of the election time frame by two hours. The computer system shut down 22 minutes before the slated time when the exercise ended at 3:38 pm.

In the end, Mayomi Adeboye Adekanye, popularly known as INEC, emerged as the President-elect of the SUG. INEC, a Philosophy department student, defeated his opponent Fakaisi Micheal Dotun, also known as WOLIMIKE, from the Mathematical Science department. INEC garnered 423 votes, while WOLIMIKE received 334 votes. Professor Olukayode Afolabi, the Chairman of the Students’ Union Electoral Committee (SUEC), declared INEC the winner of the election.
