Student executives of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, has on Monday, January 17 met with the management of the institution to discuss issues bordering reparation fee and resumption conditions.
Recall that the Senate of the University, on January 14, released a circular stating the conditions for resumption amid the indefinite closure of the institution, which includes the N20,000 reparation fee to be paid the students.
Eyeballs have been raised, tongues have been restless on the conditions for resumption. However, the student union leaders took a bold step to discuss with the management for a better condition for the students.
During the meeting, the student executives proposed that the reparation fee should be reduced to N5000.
A statement from the union reads in part, “Earlier today, being a union that represents genuine interests of the students, the Students’ Union, under the leadership of Comrade Ogunsanmi Kolade, met with the university management and discuss issues exhaustively and agitate for the majority interests of the students.
“During the meeting, the Students’ Union passionately appealed and agitated that the reparation fee should be reduced to the sum of ₦5,000, and also considering the current economic downturn witnessed in the country and feasibility for the management to realize their position on tuition fee, after a very long deliberation, the union appealed that the management should reconsider review of their position on payment of tuition fee.
“However, it was unanimously agreed that the destruction of the university properties is condemnable and such occurrence must be avoided in future. The university management opined strongly that punitive measures is necessary going forward, which the union rather appeal for more considerable measures. The students’ union also agreed to properly orientate all students against vandalising university facilities and to protect the university image at all cost.”
According to the statement released by the Public Relations Office (PRO), Comrade Asimbi, the meeting was presided over by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Olugbenga Ige. Other key members of management team in attendance were: Mr. Olugbenga Arajulu (Registrar), Mr. Tobi Orina(Bursar), Dr. Doreen Olorunfemi(Librarian), Prof. Akinawonu (Dean of Post Graduate School), Prof. M. O Akanbi (Dean of Students’ Affairs), Engr. Adejumo (Director of Works and Services), and Mrs. Temitope Gabriel (Director of Physical Planning). The Senior Special Adviser to Ondo State Governor on Youth and Students Matters, Hon. Olumuyiwa, was also in attendance.
The students would await another circular from the management of the university.
“Finally, the Vice Chancellor noted that management have listened to the proposals of the students’ union, and that management would revert back on the matter in another meeting rescheduled for tomorrow 17th January, 2022., after consultations.”
